Day 39: Thursday 31/05/2012

They are going to start the weaning off process today. Even though Sergio is able to fully open his eyes, he is so heavily sedated that he is drifting in and out of consciousness all the time. Hopefully by tonight, Sergio will become a little bit more alert as the dosage of his medication decreases. The doctors are saying that it’s difficult to predict when Sergio will fully come out of his coma as each child takes a different amount of time to do so. While his eyes were opened, I played some quiet nursery songs for him but his heart rate went through the roof immediately. It was an...

Day 38: Wednesday 30/05/2012

Hopefully today is the day that Sergio will awake from his long induced coma. The paralytics was turned off this morning so at some stage later this afternoon we are anticipating that he will slowly start to come around. Initially it may just start off with some tiny finger or toe twitches. He will still be feeling very drowsy as he continues to receive quite a lot of heavy dosage medication including morphine, midazolam and methadone. Can’t wait to see those beautiful blue eyes again! 12:30pm First sign of movement with Sergio ever so slightly moving his big toe. 12:45pm Both eyelids...

Day 37: Tuesday 29/05/2012

Sergio’s saturation levels were lower than normal during the night and therefore he required more frequent suctioning. This might have been due to the position of his trachea in his windpipe and they reckon that once his sleeping position was re-adjusted, his saturations levels returned back to normal immediately afterwards. The Esophageal Atresia Team have informed us that the plan is to just to wait for 2 weeks and then perform a gap study to check his esophagus. They are happy with Sergio’s progress and delighted that they haven’t encountered any major complications so...

Day 36: Monday 28/05/2012

Happy Memorial Day! Little Sergio is having a good day with his vital levels all within the accepted range. We just have to be patient now as it’s all about playing the waiting game for the next couple of weeks. We know that it’s going to take a long time for his newly joined esophagus to properly heal up and become stronger in structure. At this stage of the treatment, the surgeons look out for any signs of leakages in the esophagus walls and thankfully Sergio hasn’t presented any such signs since his last major surgery on Friday. Sergio está teniendo un buen día con sus...

Day 34: Saturday 26/05/2012

Sergio is recovering well from yesterday’s big operation. Sometimes his heart-rate can go a bit high for short periods of time. This is due to the fact that he requires frequent suctioning of his trachea. Today there are no plans for any scans or procedures apart from removing a femoral arterial line. Now is the time for Sergio to rest so that his new esophagus is given the chance to heal and grow stronger. Sergio se está recuperando bien de la gran operación de ayer. A veces, su ritmo cardíaco va un poco más alto durante períodos cortos de tiempo. Esto es debido al hecho de que se...
