First of all I would like to apologize, as we don’t write in Help Sergio since March. We have been quite busy and day by other we couldn’t find the moment to write.

First to say is that Sergio was with the rotavirus in the hospital and he got another virus while he was there, he was in the hospital that time for one month. Then he came home and after a few weeks he had to return to the hospital because he got the same virus. This time he was in the hospital for less than 2 weeks.

Throughout all these weeks Sergio has been well without any complications, one time he was admitted in the hospital to put a new gastrostomy mickey button because was removed accidentally.

Another occasion he returned to the hospital to close the stoma he had in the neck due to the tracheotomy was done at 2 months old, as you know Sergio was with the ventilator bringing oxygen to him from 2 months until he was almost two years, and finally in January of this year was completely remove. The stoma was still open for the winter virus (just in case we needed it). Sergio did very well and thanks God he never lacks of oxygen since then.

Now Sergio is at home and he is eating small amounts of food slowly.

He has started to move from one side to another side of the room, he doesn’t stand or walk yet, but he is moving while he is sitting on the floor and he is going every week to physical therapy to start to walk.

Sergio has improved a lot but there are still many things to do.

Basically Sergio is feeding by a GJ tube, which is placed, in his intestine, the problem we have now is basically that his stomach can’t be full of food as the Nissen fundoplication surgery is pending and he has a serious reflux and a lot of food in the stomach make him to vomit.

Sergio also needs a lot of medication throughout the day; sometimes he is using a gravity bag when he sleeps so the stomach doesn’t get full. The wonderful news is that he is interested in food and he likes so many things, he can get angry when we do not give him food at the table, but the amount of food to be given to Sergio is small at the moment.

Our goal is that we can removed to Sergio the feeding tube one day , for that he needs to start eating his calories daily, but it may not happen without the operation is pending and he need it.

We didn’t mentioned that Sergio needs esophageal dilation every 5 weeks, and hopefully with the time he will not need it, fingers crossed for this to happen, is one of the most complicated problems we have at the moment, the last dilation was on Tuesday and this time the esophagus was not structure as the last time but still, hopefully from now on Sergio and his dilatations improves.

We are excited to have him at home, is a very happy child and he can now play with his twin brother Tadgh. Thank you all for your prays and your still support thinking in Sergio. Continue to pray as still needed. (Sergio’s mam)

After spending two weeks in Our Ladies Hospital Crumlin in Dublin, Sergio was ready to be discharged on Tuesday last week. It was an exciting event for the entire family bringing Sergio home for the first time ever. We had everything in place including equipment and medical supplies. Unfortunately though it became quickly apparent that things were not going to go to plan as Sergio had profuse diarrhea that didn’t cease throughout his first night at home. He had contracted the dreaded hospital vomiting bug (Rotavirus). As he became increasingly weak and extremely dehydrated, we were left with no choice but to bring him back to the hospital first thing in the morning. In the emergency room he received IV fluids to counteract his dehydration. Over the last week he has been spiking fever high temperatures and is feeling exhausted from the rampant bug. Now it appears that Tadhg, Mammy and Grandmother have caught the same bug as well. The twins are 2 years old the 5th of March and the birthday celebration has been put on hold until everyone is feeling better.

Sergio O’Connor, Donal, Rosa and Tadhg arrived back in Ireland this week after a stay of over nine months in the Children’s Hospital Boston where Sergio underwent specialist life-changing operations and treatment not available in Ireland.

Sergio and his father Donal travelled home by air-ambulance with refueling stopovers in Newfoundland and Iceland before arriving in Dublin late last night. They were met on arrival by an ambulance for transfer to Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin.

Donal and his wife Rosa are so appreciative of the excellent care and medical attention they received in Boston and will be forever in their debt.

Sergio is now into a new phase of his life and with the support of the staff of Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, will continue to make progress.

Sergio will remain under observation in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. It is hoped that Sergio will be discharged in the near future, allowing his parents Donal and Rosa to bring their smiley baby home from hospital to live with the rest of his family for the very first time. Since his birth in March 2011, Sergio has been confined to hospitals. It is hoped that he can live a relatively normal life with his twin brother, Tadhg at the family home in Dublin.

Donal and Rosa would like to acknowledge the overwhelming support from so many sources in the community, including neighbours, friends and traditional musicians across the country who rallied behind the O’Connor family and have been actively supporting the Help Sergio Appeal with concerts and fundraising events. Donal who works in rehabilitation at the Central Remedial Clinic, Clontarf, has taken unpaid leave of absence to care for Sergio in Boston.

Sergio had his scheduled esophogram this afternoon. The procedure was quick and Sergio was back in his room 30 minutes later. We weren’t able to get the formal report from the surgeons as they were caught up with another case and therefore didn’t get a chance to calculate the measurements. However the contrast studies appear to show no significant change from last week which is actually good news.

Just before going to bed, Sergio’s nurse luckily spotted that his PIC line was somehow exposed and nearly falling out. Ironically there was talk that they might take out his PIC line today anyhow. The IV nurse was in the room within minutes to pull out the entire line. I guess it’s one step closer to getting all the lines off Sergio.

Apologizes for not updating the blog since before Christmas. The truth be told, we have been on a bit of a roller coaster of highs and lows over the last few weeks. The main concern was that a small part of Sergio’s esophagus was narrowing right down and it appeared that the weekly dilations were not working. The surgeons then started talking about the possibility of needing further major surgery which would take several more months to recovery from. We were fairly devastated with the news that was delivered to us before Christmas. The surgeons said they would try one last approach using a new chemo drug which they would inject during dilations into the scar tissue where the stricture is. Honestly we didn’t really believe that this new treatment could solve the problem. Our prayers were answered as amazingly it did work after only two dilations. It’s now been five weeks since his last dilation and the esophagus hasn’t narrowed. We are just over the moon to finally get some good news for a change. It has been a really long rough road for all of us here.

The other big news is that last Saturday, Sergio’s trach was taken out in ICU. Sergio did brilliantly and was delighted to finally get rid of it. He was like a celebrity being back on the ICU floor with all the nurses calling over to see him before he went to sleep. The ICU team had looked after Sergio so well for seven months. The following morning he was transferred back to his floor.

Everyone is so excited with all the latest development and Dr Jennings reckons that we should be good to go home by the end of the month.

This morning the boys got a big surprise as they went to visit Santa for the first time ever. They went completely silence and appeared rather dubious about the big man all dressed in red. Sergio kept looking back and forth from Santa to me with an expression that more or less read “help me, I don’t like the look of this man”. Tadhg ran off to a hiding spot in the corner of the room and spied on Santa from a safe distance away. It was only when Santa produced two teddy bears that the boys’ mood change to one of sudden joy. It was great to see how they both responded to Santa’s greeting with conflicting feelings.

Sergio had his second dilation at 2pm down in the operating room. He was back on his ward two hours later and there the surgeon briefed us on how the procedure went. Last week they were able to dilate the narrow esophagus back up to 8mm at the strictured area and today they further extended it by 2mm. It’s encouraging news and the surgeon hopes to repeat the same process next week.

Last night Sergio was very restless in his sleep, tossing and turning a lot. He kept waking up crying uncontrollably and jamming his fist into his mouth trying to take the edge off his pain. The pain team were eventually called and a rescue dose of methadone was administered quickly. It certainly settled him out straight away as the crying stopped.

Yesterday they had just started to wean the methadone medication but Sergio had displayed early signs of experiencing withdrawal symptoms even before falling asleep. He was sweating so much that his pajamas and bed linen were completely soaking wet. It is extremely hard and sad to see him suffer like this during these necessary yet difficult pain medication weans.

Sergio’s Aunt Belen and Uncle Rafa unfortunately had to fly back to Madrid this evening. The week just flew by so quickly for all us. It was great having them here visiting but family goodbyes are always sad affairs. The twins really bonded with them with much ease and so shall miss having them around.

Following Sergio’s dilation this afternoon, the Doctor called to give us a post-op brief. As expected, the camera scope spotted one small section of Sergio’s esophagus that had narrowed right down to 3mm. This confirms what was identified in the x-rays from last week’s esophogram. Today with a dilation balloon, they were successfully able to dilate it back to a reasonable size of 8mm. Then strong steroids were injected into the strictured tissue to help prevent it from narrowing up again. Hopefully this new technique will work as they plan to repeat the same process next week to see if any progress is made. With the help of a long nap in the recovery room, by evening time Sergio had recovered well from the procedure.
